.The meeting was called to order by the chair Tim Willis. Minutes were taken by Tee Fabikun
The minutes of the 16th June were adopted.
Richard Stubbs circulated a paper on the terms of reference for the group and explained that the group should not be referred to as a Partnership because this had a legal meaning that did not reflect the actual situation. We are a community though. After a general discussion, it was agreed that we should remain as a “steering group” and the terms of reference were agreed.
Good news, the money got from SRB was very timely, as it would cover us until September.
Richard then explained in details about the new SRB fund, which would be run through Carpenters and Docklands and his conversation with Ms Reid.
A general discussion then followed on the various ways money could be raised and how to get out of the financial shortfall including the Council financing it.
All paper work done for the new funding programme but there is a delay in releasing the detail. Michael promised to look into it, as it is taking too long.
Richard Stubbs explained the bid in which Newham.net would be a partner. This bid is with UEL as the lead and some other institutions in Germany, Greece, Sweden and some European countries. Even if it succeeds no funds will likely be available for over a year. Agreed that the Steering Group would be happy for Carpenters Connect to be involved.
Richard Overton explained that the Air condition unit could not be purchased and as a result of a power failure, the back up also collapsed which created a lot of headache and work in the server room. The entire Carpenters Connect network would be shut down on the 23rd July so that electricians could carry out necessary repair work.
The server was repaired after hours of hard work but there is the possibility that this might happen again. This led to the suggestion that maybe an encrypt backup could be stored in the Council’s system.
Due to the demand of people wanting to know how the whole project is set up and cost, part of the ODPM’s fund would be used to document the project so that anyone would be able to copy or transfer the technology.
A meeting has been set up with Blick so as to finally sort out all the cabling problems within the Estate.
Craft College: Two servers have been installed in the College and installations made but only one has been tried and tested.
Games: Although the games have been tried and tested on the network, an upgrade is needed as a few problems/errors were apparent which requires more work. Violent games are yet to be blocked. This would be done during the formal launch where residents would be advised and parental control/password could be put in place.
NHS direct is also showing error and this is creating a bit of a headache, as the company that set it up is no longer in existence. Due to errors in the code this service may have to be removed, as the updated set top box software no longer tolerates the errors.
Four channels are being shown on Free to Air due to the capacity of the server however it is anticipated more will be added soon. The ODPM’s fund would enable us buy a satellite and a new channel could be launched weekly.
A lot of the schools’ educational stuff/software are unknown but arrangements are being made to provide access to the school from home and set top boxes are to be installed in all the classrooms.
Plato, like Learndirect will not work properly on the system due to screen resolution problems.
Simon Gallimore explained a verbal agreement with William Grosvenor to extend funding till September.
Tee then explained TMO’s promise to pick up Nicola and James’ salaries should the need arise.
Meanwhile H2H would run a summer school for the kids on the Estate.
Nicola has made 15 films on the various meetings and discussions of the Masterplanners, which are already in the system.
Work on the website is still going on.
Hansard society is a bit quiet at the moment but would like to submit some of the H2H stuff to a website for promotion.
Gary Simmons would be making videos of the various activities going on in Carpenters and Docklands, which would be put in the system.
A number of suggestions were made about the demonstration, which would be effected in the Sept. presentation. The demo. Would be held in the Carpenters TMO building.
A big “thank you” was said to Richard Stubbs and Richard Overton for all the hard work done when the system went down. The Steering group recognise and appreciate the dedication and selfless service the two men put in during that weekend.
The
next meeting will be at 3.00pm on 15th September.
