Roger McMaster
Newham Libraries |
|
Roger McMaster
is the Acting Head of Libraries and is based at the Leisure Services Department
offices at 292 Barking Road E6.
The Library Service has been providing information technology for public use for some
time. It provides access to CD Roms in all libraries and to the Internet and Open Learning
materials at the Beckton Globe.
The Libraries Dept. wants to spread that availability, to provide individuals with
the opportunity to use IT and to learn about it and have access to the information which
it delivers whether for educational, employment, or training reasons or indeed out of
simple interest. The see themselves as providing points of access to the potential of the
Grid, as being important providers of information to the Grid and equally importantly in
helping people find their way round the huge mass of information that they will find on
the Grid. |
 Prof. Nod
Miller
U.E.L |
|
Nod Miller is
Professor of Innovation Studies at the University of East London. She joined UEL in 1995
after 17 years in the Faculty of Education in the University of Manchester, most recently
as Head of the Centre for Adult and Higher Education. She describes herself variously as
an adult educator, a media sociologist, a communications specialist, a fan of popular
culture, an action researcher, a T-group trainer, a feminist autobiographer, an
experiential learner and an internationalist.
She has written and edited books on adult education, learning from experience and media
policy; her most recent book (co-edited with David Boud) is Working with experience:
animating learning (Routledge, 1996). Her current research interests include the use of
new technologies in education and the place of technology in everyday life.
One of her current projects is organising UEL's Festival of Lifelong Learning to take
place in Docklands during 2000-1 and she is keen to contribute to the development of
Newham Learning Grid as an important resource for lifelong learning. |
 Michael
Mulquin
U.K.C.O. |
|
Michael Mulquin is
Executive Director of Communities Online, which is promoting an inclusive Information
Society. Communities Online does this by focusing on the local, and has about 80 local ICT
projects in its network, exchanging information and ideas through several different email
discussion lists. CO run events and have a web site on www.communities.org.uk. It also works with
Government at various levels and, for instance, Michael is on the Policy Action Team
looking at IT in deprived neighbourhoods run by the DTI. He is also involved in setting up
the European Association for Community Networking which is linking similar initiatives up
throughout Europe. Finally, Michael is chair of Newham Online.
Michael lives in East Ham and has been working in Newham since 1989. He was a Race
Equality Officer with Newham Council for Racial Equality for just over 2 years and then
Co-ordinator of the Community Involvement Unit of Aston Charities for six years. Before
that he had spent 3 years in India and 8 years in Pakistan, he can speak and read Urdu
fairly fluently.
Michael is interested in Newham Learning Grid, partly because it has very important links
with the development of Newham Online and partly because he is interested generally in
ICTs and local education. This is helped by the fact that Communities Online has the
Director of the Scottish Council for Educational Technology and a member of staff from the
British Education and Communication Technology Agency on its Board, which helps to keep
Michael up to date on these issues. In general Michael is very interested in the way the
technology can help build stronger links between schools and other educational
institutions and the local community, to the benefit of both.
